The word Jyotish comes from Sanskrit — jyoti meaning light, and ish meaning lord or master — traditionally translated as “the science of light” or “science of the luminous bodies.” It is one of the six classical Vedanga (limbs of the Vedas), historically used to determine the correct timing for rituals and, over centuries, developed into the full predictive and diagnostic system practised today.
In everyday use in Bengal and across India, Jyotish refers to what English speakers usually call “Indian astrology” or “Vedic astrology” — distinct from Western (tropical) astrology in its calculations, its use of the sidereal zodiac, and its emphasis on planetary periods (Dasha) rather than sun-sign generalisations alone.
How the Consultation Works
- Kundli (birth chart) construction from your date, time and place of birth
- Reading of planetary strength, placement and mutual aspects across the twelve houses
- Dasha (planetary period) analysis to understand timing — not just character
- Cross-checking with palmistry (hastarekha) for a second, independent confirmation
- Practical remedies — mantras, gemstones or simple rituals — only where the chart genuinely calls for them
How Jyotish Differs From Western Astrology
The most common confusion is with Western (tropical) astrology, which most people encounter through daily sun-sign horoscopes. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — anchored to the actual visible constellations, adjusted for their slow drift (Ayanamsha) — rather than the tropical zodiac fixed to the seasons. This is why a person's Jyotish (sidereal) sign often differs from their familiar Western sun sign by roughly 23–24 degrees.
The second major difference is emphasis: Jyotish puts significant weight on the Dasha system — a sequence of planetary periods, each ruled by a different planet, that unfold over a person's lifetime. This is what allows a Jyotish reading to speak to timing — when a favourable career period is likely to begin, or when a challenging phase may ease — rather than only describing personality traits in general terms.
In Bankura and across Bengal, Jyotish has been practised continuously for generations, treated as a serious, evidence-based tradition rather than casual entertainment. Prof. Subhas Sastri's approach reflects that: an honest, chart-specific verdict first, with remedies suggested only where the chart genuinely shows a need for them.
