Jyotish · The Science of Light

What is Jyotish?

Jyotish, literally the “science of light,” is the classical Indian system of astrology that reads a birth chart to understand character, timing and life direction. Here's what it actually involves — and how Prof. Subhas Sastri practises it in Bankura.

In short: Jyotish is Vedic astrology — an ancient Indian system that maps the positions of the sun, moon and planets at the exact moment of birth into a chart (Kundli), then reads that chart to understand a person's nature, life periods (Dasha) and the likely timing of major events. Prof. Subhas Sastri practises Jyotish alongside palmistry from Bankura, West Bengal, for clients across India and abroad.

The word Jyotish comes from Sanskrit — jyoti meaning light, and ish meaning lord or master — traditionally translated as “the science of light” or “science of the luminous bodies.” It is one of the six classical Vedanga (limbs of the Vedas), historically used to determine the correct timing for rituals and, over centuries, developed into the full predictive and diagnostic system practised today.

In everyday use in Bengal and across India, Jyotish refers to what English speakers usually call “Indian astrology” or “Vedic astrology” — distinct from Western (tropical) astrology in its calculations, its use of the sidereal zodiac, and its emphasis on planetary periods (Dasha) rather than sun-sign generalisations alone.

Jyotish, in short: A birth chart (Kundli) is built from your exact date, time and place of birth. The chart records where each planet sat in the sky at that moment, mapped across twelve houses and twelve zodiac signs. Reading that chart — the planets' strength, their mutual aspects, and the Dasha period currently active — is what a Jyotish consultation actually consists of.

How the Consultation Works

  • Kundli (birth chart) construction from your date, time and place of birth
  • Reading of planetary strength, placement and mutual aspects across the twelve houses
  • Dasha (planetary period) analysis to understand timing — not just character
  • Cross-checking with palmistry (hastarekha) for a second, independent confirmation
  • Practical remedies — mantras, gemstones or simple rituals — only where the chart genuinely calls for them

How Jyotish Differs From Western Astrology

The most common confusion is with Western (tropical) astrology, which most people encounter through daily sun-sign horoscopes. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — anchored to the actual visible constellations, adjusted for their slow drift (Ayanamsha) — rather than the tropical zodiac fixed to the seasons. This is why a person's Jyotish (sidereal) sign often differs from their familiar Western sun sign by roughly 23–24 degrees.

The second major difference is emphasis: Jyotish puts significant weight on the Dasha system — a sequence of planetary periods, each ruled by a different planet, that unfold over a person's lifetime. This is what allows a Jyotish reading to speak to timing — when a favourable career period is likely to begin, or when a challenging phase may ease — rather than only describing personality traits in general terms.

In Bankura and across Bengal, Jyotish has been practised continuously for generations, treated as a serious, evidence-based tradition rather than casual entertainment. Prof. Subhas Sastri's approach reflects that: an honest, chart-specific verdict first, with remedies suggested only where the chart genuinely shows a need for them.

Jyotish FAQs

Jyotish is Sanskrit for “science of light,” from jyoti (light) and ish (lord/master). It refers to the classical Indian system of astrology based on reading a birth chart against the positions of the sun, moon and planets.
Jyotish is the Indian (Vedic) branch of astrology. In English it is usually called “Vedic astrology” or “Indian astrology” to distinguish it from Western tropical astrology, though in everyday Bengali and Hindi usage, “Jyotish” simply means astrology.
Western sun-sign astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons, and rarely accounts for planetary periods. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the visible constellations, and places heavy emphasis on Dasha (planetary period) timing — which is why a full Kundli reading can speak to when events are likely, not just what traits a person has.
Yes, ideally. The Lagna (ascendant) — which anchors the entire chart — is calculated from your exact birth time, so accuracy matters. If your birth time is uncertain, Prof. Sastri can often refine it using life-event rectification during the consultation.
Jyotish is a structured, rule-based system — planetary positions are astronomically calculated, and chart interpretation follows classical texts and established methods. Prof. Sastri's approach is to give an honest, chart-specific verdict rather than a generic or fear-based prediction, and to explain the reasoning behind any remedy suggested.
